This post was written by our friend Edward Stuart, an art and decoration enthusiast as well as an online publisher Canvas Art.
Whether you just like the idea of making your own paint, you’re worried about commercial paint toxicity, or you just don’t want to support international trade paint making can be a fun and rewarding experience for anyone. Once you know the basics making paint is relatively simple, and exploring and coming up with new types of paint for yourself is half the fun. Let’s take a look at how you can get started.

Basic Paint

Paint is made up of three things: color pigments, sticky stuff (so it sticks to a surface), and runny stuff (so you can spread it). These are referred to as pigments, binders, and thinners respectively. Below we’re going to look at a few varieties of each, and give some ideas about what to look for to come up with new ones.

Pigments

Pigments can be made of just about anything. Commercial paints are made largely with synthetic pigments that you can buy online, but you can also substitute a vast array of organic colors. An easy way to get pigments out of stuff is by boiling, though that’s not always the best way. Other ways might be to crush, mash, or grind raw or dried ingredients like barks, leaves, flowers, minerals, charcoal, or even dirt. The best way to find out is to just try a variety of methods to see what works best.

Binders

The binder is the stuff that the pigment is put in that doesn’t evaporate off. If you only had a pigment and a thinner, the end result would just leave some pigment dust on you surface that might easily be blown or brushed off. What defines a binding agent is that it absorbs and suspends other stuff for application. Good binders often contain fats, for example egg yolks contain fats, and any variety of oil you can think of can be used to bind pigments. Other options include wax, resins, or even just plain water. Using water as a binder won’t leave anything but the pigment itself when it dries, which might be undesirable unless your pigment can adhere to your painting surface independently.

Thinners

Thinners are used to dilute or dissolve your paint to give it a more desirable consistency. Thinners often come in the form of water (water colors!), alcohol, turpentine, or acetone. The thing they all have in common is that they’ll evaporate and not leave anything behind in the long run. Modifying the amount of thinner in your paint allows you to control how densely your pigment is spread on your surface. If your paint is already using oil or another runny liquid as a binder you might not need a thinner at all since the oil might make your paint sufficiently runny on its own. Another interesting thing about thinners is that you can use them to modify the surface tension of your paint. If you don’t want your water based paint to bead on your page you can add a non-water thinner to disrupt the surface tension and give you a more even spread.

Colours are an inevitable and ever-present element in oil painting. Colours are considered as the final stage in the creation of the effect of pictorial realism. Crucial are colours in painting and colours always played an important role in the structure of the creation of an oil painting. Yet it was not until after the nineteenth century did artists gain courage to abandon their old ways of colour usage in oil painting and make vast and drastic changes to the use of colours. These changes were mostly to sacrifice on tones. In the process of this change and transition that oil paintings were facing, forms had the tendency to be lost in paintings and artists rid their their paintings of dim interiors in order to incorporate bright landscapes through the use of colours. Beginning from the early nineteenth century, artists from all over Europe, especially the English artists had a major influence in the use of colours as the changes came about.

Influential artists appeared in great numbers as the changes came about during the early nineteenth century. Some of them are very famous even to this day. Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch artist whose artworks had great fame, is a great example of whose paintings conveyed the perception and existence of nature by employing fierce colours and unique brushstrokes. Another famous artist on the list is Corot, who made use of colour tones close to one another to paint paintings containing a very large area. Corot also devised and made subtle use of light and dark to beautify his paintings. Gauguin is another great example of artists who gained great achievements in colour design. Gauguin enclosed colour schemes through the usage of line design. One great master whose works were undeniably wonderful is an artist by the name of Turner. Turner knew about the effects that different weather conditions had on landscapes and he possessed an unrivalled amount of knowledge on that subject. The knowledge of Turner helped him illustrate his imaginations on canvas with great excellence. The fact that all these artists were influential is undeniable because these artists clearly changed the entire history of colour design. These artists took a bold step forward in advancing the design of colours, thus creating what is present in this day.

The influence that past artists left caused many paintings in this modern age to have similar looks and styles that resemble the paintings done by artists of the past. These effects are evident in modern day oil paintings because many artists today still use many styles of colour usage applied in the nineteenth century. The use of colours and the designs in modern oil paintings are a reflection of the styles in the past, which slowly added up and amounted into a collection of great oil painting styles.

Denmark was responsible for some of the 20th Century’s most celebrated and talented furniture designers and one name that rightly sits at the top table in this respect is that of Verner Panton. Panton was one of the biggest names in the world of interior design during his impressive and acclaimed career which spanned over half a century.

He worked alongside fellow Dane and furniture designer, Arne Jacobsen, for much of his career and, between them, they were responsible for some of the most iconic and revolutionary pieces of furniture of the last 100 years.

One of Panton’s most famous pieces of furniture was unquestionably that of the ‘S’ Chair which was a radical departure from the other forms of furniture readily available during this era and marked Panton as a man to watch in designer furniture circles. It is little wonder that the S Chair raised so many eyebrows as its unusual and unconventional design bucked many of the prevailing trends of the decade.

As you can see, Verner Panton furniture was quite considerably ahead of its time in terms of the actual design of the pieces and his ‘S’ Chair was created in 1960 and by 1967 it was the first ever plastic chair to be made out of a single section of plastic. Another key feature of this piece of Panton furniture was the fact that it was incredibly durable and resilient which made it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

One of the most impressive characteristics of the Verner Panton S Chair is the fact that it boasts the sort of universality that means it’s equally as suited for children as it is for a stylish contemporary residential space and this is the sort of attention to detail that really set Panton apart.

Over the course of his career, Verner Panton furniture gradually got more and more unusual and out of the ordinary and his revolutionary designs which encompassed many different elements of interior design including lighting, seating and furnishings. He was famed for his eye-catching shapes and willingness to try new things and it was this dedication to pushing the envelope that garnered Panton such a lofty and well-respected position within the industry.

This article was written by Amy Elliott. Amy is a writer with an interest in art and interior design. She occasionally writes for Ironbridge Fine Arts & Framing, specialists in bespoke framing, art restoration and etching presses. You can find out more about them by visiting their website (http://www.ironbridgeframing.co.uk/printing-presses-for-sale).

Etching on glass or other media is a process that chemically consumes or abrades certain areas, which creates a rough image, or a frosted image on glass. Etchings are elegant in their simplicity; the details in the etching consist of naught but the media itself. Etching is one of the most unique types of art, because there are a variety of techniques by which to do it. With a bit of imagination and some basic supplies, you can create artwork you’ll be proud to display. Below we’ll provide some examples and steps for etching on various media:

Etching on a Glass Bottle

This type of etching begins with the stencil material and pattern. Make your stencils from a material that will protect areas of the bottle that you don’t want to etch; it will need to be in black and white only. Cut out the areas you want to etch, and you’re ready for the next step—choosing an etching method, which we’ll discuss below.

Acid Etching

Most people start learning the craft with acid etching cream. This method is easiest and least expensive; supplies are found at any craft store and if you can find a cheap etching press for sale that’s great. However, the acid etching process is simple to the point of being boring at times, and most crafters move on to other methods.

Glass Sandblasting

Sandblasting produces far more noticeable results, and it’s a more versatile technique when combined with shading and sand carving. This type of graphic etching is prized for its beauty, but the equipment required to do it can be very expensive.

Etching with Hydrofluoric Acid

Some think that the abovementioned acid cream can be used interchangeably with hydrofluoric acid, but there are some differences to be aware of. Hydrofluoric acid is very dangerous; the acid cream option is much safer—that’s why the latter is far more common. If you do decide to work with hydrofluoric acid, be sure to wear a respirator, to work in a well-vented area, and to wear the necessary safety gear.

Engraving

Engraving differs from conventional etching in that the process relies upon power tools; usually, it’s an electric engraver or a copper wheel. Engraving produces a look unlike the other methods we’ve discussed—the finished product usually looks like a pencil sketch. Most engravings are done by tracing a printed or sketched pattern placed behind the glass or drawn on the metal.

Etching isn’t the most widely recognized craft, but its history is long. Glass isn’t the only material which can be etched—you can achieve equally beautiful results on wood and metal as well. Most people start off by personalizing small items like drinking glasses, and when they see how fun it is (and how impressive the results are) they tend to keep up the hobby for life. Creating graphic etchings is a very rewarding craft, and if you are proficient enough, you can even turn your hobby into a profitable business.

Turning your home into an artistic expression of yourself is never particularly easy. Hiring an interior decorator can be helpful, but at the end of the day no one else can really get your style as well as yourself. Learning to explicitly define your style can make it easier for you to do your own decorating or it can make the use of a professional considerably more successful precisely because you’ll be able to explain your ideas.

Simple vs. Busy

Do you like the idea of hanging a tiny picture on an otherwise empty white wall and letting people comment on the white space? Would that prompt you to launch into a fevered soliloquy about the beauty of smooth surfaces, the calmness of empty space, and the poetry of silence? On the other end of the spectrum do you enjoy a chaotic spread of ornate frames, candles dripping wax on an end table, book shelves reaching to the ceiling, and warm fuzzy carpets? You prefer your décor busy, intricate, and complex.

Pick a Theme

If you could choose, would you prefer living in the mountains, in the middle of an ancient forest, on a sunny farm on a dusty plain, a 50s suburb with a white picket fence, or in a gray urban jungle? The environment you prefer says something about the colors you probably prefer inside your house, regardless of where it actually is. Mountain people like cold colors like blues and grays, granite countertops, and lots of glass. Forest creatures like to keep it organic with warm greens and browns and big gnarly wood beams and wooden furniture. In the farm house you probably enjoy warm rusty reds, sunny yellows and dusty tans along with a worn vintage flavor (which means wood). Suburban types enjoy neutrals and pastels, off-white carpets, and a wide array of materials in their décor from plastics to glass to wood. In the urban jungle you probably prefer bright and bold colors to offset the gray outside along with modern furniture fashioned from metals, plastic, or whatever else cuts a sleek figure. Pick a profile or make up your own, whatever you do, it’ll focus your ideas toward a cohesive vision of your home, which will go a long way toward making it work out well for you.

Think About Mediums

Your home décor is expressed through a variety of mediums, and knowing how or whether to use them is another trick. Take the forest theme example. Going with the style of this person you would probably have a large rough wooden table, wooden countertops, and a big fireplace dominating the living room. You would probably forego hanging pictures on the wall however, and instead hang plants from your ceiling or set them on shelves along your walls to keep it as organic as possible. On the other end, the concrete jungle theme person might hang a picture of a plant instead of putting a live one among the décor because that would fit more with that particular theme.

When people walk up to your house, one of the first sights upon which they feast your eyes is the mailbox. In fact, it’s one of the tools at your home that actually gets used every day. Instead of having a dull and boring mailbox grace the presence of your front door, try one of these funky ideas to bring more bursts of life to your home.

DIY Mailboxes

If you want something truly unique attached to your front door or at the end of the driveway, make your own mailbox. Using a variety of paints, you can literally create whatever you want on it. It might be a family crest, series of funny quotations or just a silly picture. Whatever you do, be certain that the materials are safe for outdoor use.

Animal Mailboxes

Pet owners love their furry-and not so furry-friends, so have your mailbox modeled about one of these beloved critters. From dogs and cats to lizards and birds, an array of possibilities exist. For a really cool appeal, find one that uses the mouth of the animal as the part that opens up to receive all of your magazines, Christmas cards, letters from pen pals and bills. Don’t fret about your decision; this dog is certainly one that will not chase the mailman down the street!

Hobby Mailboxes

Let the world know what you love to do in your spare time. Whether it’s a mailbox crafted from the image of a monster truck or one that looks like a plate of food you love to cook, all different types of styles are available. An excellent idea is to purchase a mailbox that matches your business theme, especially if it’s one that clients and customers frequent. From the moment they walk up to the front door, they’ll be aware that your business is there to serve. When you order the mailbox, find out if you can have a message welcoming people to your practice or business engraved or written on the surface.

Large Structures

Sometimes, you might want a mailbox that can double as a decoration on the front lawn. If that’s the case, try something really unique. For example, you might purchase a huge fake Christmas tree that has a slot for mail in it to use during the holiday season. Other suggestions include a stadium replica of your favorite team’s home base, a model of an ATM machine, an image of a mountain that you’ve always dreamed of climbing and so forth. These might be a little confusing when you first put them though. In order to ensure that you continue to receive your mail at the proper times, wait outside on the first day and let the mailman know where your next mail receptacle is.

Having a funky and unique mailbox is one of the ways that you can add some character and life to your house. Check out all of the possible options available before you spend the money on one of these ideas.

There are many stories that demonstrate how a great photo or a well-written phrase can positively influence people. Photojournalists working in war-torn countries bring home stories in their pictures that motivate others to act. Writers use words to bring important issues to light. One of the most powerful partnerships is found between the creative arts and charitable efforts. Charitable entities often work on behalf of a particular cause or group of people. They rely on finding ways to attract potential donors. Similarly, artists use their passion and vision to infuse their art with meaning. There is a natural synergy between charitable giving and the creative arts that these case studies highlight.

John Unger and Schoep

John Unger rescued Schoep as a puppy. Unger credits Schoep with getting him through many of his hard times. At 19 years old, Schoep began to suffer from arthritis. Unger didn’t have the funds to afford surgery and he knew Schoep’s time was limited. To commemorate his nearly two decade-long relationship with Schoep, Unger asked a friend to take a few pictures while the two swam in Lake Superior. That photo received more than two million views and enough donations to allow Unger to pay for Schoep’s surgery.

Michael J. Fox and Parkinson’s Disease

The actor Michael J. Fox was already famous when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000. He started a foundation that pledged to donate 85 percent of all received funds directly to Parkinson’s research studies. The actor has leveraged his own visibility to attract support from fellow artists, as well as scientists and financiers to bring support to finding a cure for this disease. To date, more than 30 million has been raised.

Art Start and Volunteer Artists

The Art Start organization is a New York City nonprofit that connects homeless youth with art. The programs take place at homeless shelters and alternative incarceration facilities around the city. The program has earned the support of celebrities like Bruce Willis. The organization’s programming is led by amateur and professional artists who volunteer their time to teach art classes for the students. The program also supports students who show promise in the arts through their “emerging artists in residence” program. The Art Start program has leveraged the power of the arts to share students’ stories with potential individual and business donors who can help the charity grow.

Charity Plus Art Equals Change

There are more examples like these that highlight the mutual benefits charitable causes and artists find when working together. Musicians, artists, photographers, dancers and actors have gifts charities need to express their causes in poignant and moving ways. Charities, in turn, have causes worth supporting and sharing. By working together and combining their networks, artists, charities and their constituents can all benefit.

About the Author: Allie Capron is a nonprofit director and regular patron of the arts. She has learned from leading arts philanthropists like John Studzinski that charitable causes and artists receive the most public support by partnering together.

Pursuing a career in interior design is a decision that will provide a career based on creativity. It will allow you to let your creative mind determine your income level for the rest of your life. However, interior design is a highly competitive industry. In order to truly stand out among the rest, you will need to ensure that your resume is stellar and eye catching. It will need to practically convey your work experience and education, while also conveying your creativity and passion. This careful balanced can be achieved, but it will take a great amount of effort. Creating a stellar interior design resume is not a difficult feat and will require the same level of attention to detail that you place in your work.

Steps to a Stellar Resume

Creating an impressive, eye-catching resume can be done by following the below blueprint:

Decide on Your Layout – Much like designing a living room, deciding on the overall layout is the first step in creating a stellar resume. Chronological layouts are highly functional and perhaps best-suited for an interior designer. This type of resume will start by highlighting your education, then your work experience. You will list everything by the date that it occurred. Conversely, if you do not have a lot of experience nor formal education, a functional layout that highlights your skills may be ideal.

Provide Education and Experience – Begin your resume with a personal mission statement. Immediately below that, provide your work experience and include every job that you’ve held within the interior design field. It’s wise to read the job description and tailor your work experience to the job for which you are applying. Immediately after you have provided your relevant work experience, provide your education. Include the names of any interior design schools that you have attended, even if you did not receive your degree. Be prepared to answer questions about what you’ve learned from each school.

Highlight Awards and Achievements – Following your work experience and education, list any awards and achievements that you’ve received. These can be at the local or international level. They may have even been granted by your interior design school. In this section, also include any organizations or associations that you are a part of, such as the International Interior Design Association. These awards, achievements and associations can greatly set you apart from other applicants.

Include References and a Portfolio – You may decide to openly list any references that you have available, or you may wish to simply include a note saying “references are available upon request.” Either way, ensure that your references include a mix of former bosses, previous or current clients as well as personal references. Your interior design portfolio and resume should always accompany each other. Your portfolio should include a number of key projects that you have worked on in the past. Additionally, an ideal portfolio will illustrate the entire design process – not just the end result. Include the initial concept sketches and images of the completed piece of work. Be ready to discuss the projects with prospective employers in their entirety.

Add a Touch of Creativity – You are an interior designer; the design of your layout should reflect your skills. Consider adding a pleasing color scheme throughout the resume. You may also wish to include a personal logo, complementary shapes or impressive graphics. Allow your creativity to flow to create a professional and ideal resume.

Put Your Design Side Forward

Creating your interior design resume is similar to creating other types of resumes. However, it must include an expertly crafted portfolio in order to be effective. Channel your creative side and run wild with your resume, as long as the end result is professional and tasteful. Your resume should showcase your creative skills; by creating a stellar interior design resume, you’ll be able to ensure a long and rewarding career.

Web design is all about conveying information to the users in the most direct, clean and usable manner. Corporate website designing also needs to capture the feel of the company and its purpose, while remaining professional in order to attain a solid and lasting impression to its customers.

Graphics, layouts and color palettes are all essential in how the customers perceive a company when visiting their website. Dark color designs, for example, can be interpreted as serious, while blue hues give a feeling of trust.

As a business owner, it is important to stay on top and take care of every aspect of your business. Apart from studying the competition, hiring the best workers and making adjustments to your business model, there are a lot of other things you need to do in order to survive in tougher economic times. This is exactly where your website plays an instrumental role.

The Biggest Reason Why Web Design is Important for Any Business on the Internet

A website is probably one of the most overlooked aspects of a small business. People often tend to have small basic website to promote their business, which is more like an electronic brochure with fewer details about your product or service. In the online world, your website is like a virtual handshake and will help you create an everlasting impression. On the other hand, it is pointless to have a good website if you had no visitors. Therefore it is important to pay some attention on getting the right exposure. In the present times, things are changing at a faster pace and a good web designer’s team would ensure that you start getting all the visibility you need on the internet. There are different kinds of marketing campaigns today; however you must choose the one that suits your business niche.

The internet is a dynamic phenomenon and it is changing constantly. There are newer functionalities being introduced for the websites and it is mandatory to be updated with these developments. There are companies that employ Joomla modules to enhance their websites and develop more functionality. It is virtually impossible for any business owner to be acquainted with the latest website designs and hence it would be ideal to outsource this job to a reliable graphic design team.

What Web Design has done for Businesses on the Internet?

Web Design has elevated to a new level altogether and therefore it becomes necessary for the business owners to develop a visually appealing site. This would not only create a positive impact about their business, but would also encourage the users to visit again. A good corporate website designing goes a long way when it comes to promoting your products. The design would enable easy navigation all around the site and the users can easily access all the information they need. With the inception of newer gadgets and handheld devices, it has become extremely important to develop applications that are accessible on the go.

Summary: corporate website design is all about turning over information to their user in the usable, clean and direct manner. While covering many aspects it conveys information to their user in a well designed manner.
